Day One
Today is the first day of the rest of my healthy life. It’s a promise to myself that I will put my health above all the little things that I let get in the way. Little things like 8 month old baby boys, 13 year old cranky girls, and a house that seems to spill its contents on a whim.
Since this is my first day, let me introduce myself. I’m a 36 year old stay at home mom. I home school my children, obviously the 13 year old gets more ‘school’ time than the 8 month old, but we’re teaching him sign language. If you’re thinking that my day must be easy, you’d be wrong. I actually teach for about 4-6 hours a day, plus all the little moments I get to sneak in a lesson about something. There are some days we don’t leave the house and trust me, it shows! I breastfeed my son, which takes a lot of time out of my day, not that I’m complaining, its just a lot of work. Not to mention play time with both my kids.
For the last 8 months I’ve been letting the demands of an infant, my teen, my house, my husband, and various writing jobs I can snag deter me from taking care of myself. I’m at an all time high of 218. Not good! After the initial depression, I’m looking around at what in my life is out of whack. First, no exercise, before Jack was born I was something of an exercise fanatic. Now I’m lucky to get in a mile in a week. Second, bad foods, while I do my best to eat right, my husband and daughter have been doing most of the cooking. When I first came home from the hospital that was needed, I’d had a c-section and was in quite a little bit of pain. But that time off of cooking healthy engendered an addiction to sugar and high calorie junk foods.
Today I’m breaking away from my addictions. First, today there will be no soda for me, diet or otherwise. Second, I’m walking at least a mile and preferably two. I don’t have a meal plan laid out, but I do have an idea of what I want to eat for the day.
Breakfast: 2 egg white omelet with veggies like tomatoes and onions (I forgot to snag other veggies at the store last week)
Snack: Strawberry Yogurt
Lunch: Lean Ham sandwich on wheat bread with honey mustard and split pea soup (homemade)Snack: apple with peanut butter
Dinner: Steamed Caribbean jerk salmon with brown rice and mixed veggies
Of course I’ll drink a lot of water. I have a handy 1.5 liter bottle that I couldn’t live without.
I want to walk as many miles as it takes for me to get from my house to Muir woods in Marin County, California. A mere 1,786 miles! It should take me less than 3 years to get there, but it’s a goal.
Without further ado, let the healthy begin!
Miles to Muir Woods: 1786 (I haven’t walked yet this morning.)
Weight loss: 0 lbs, 0 inches
